When I was in university, my professor and mentor, David Hewitt, always used to tell me that he believed I would be good at doing botanical art. Especially that I had a competition I wanted to enter with an orchid painting I was working on at the time. He encouraged me to explore this subject, and using watercolors. I felt like it was very cliche' for a girl to be painting flowers. But as time went on, I realised that I actually am fascinated by flowers. I noticed myself taking photos of flowers everywhere I went, and saving references of gorgeous exotic flowers I find online.
Sometimes we underestimate what the older and the wiser see in us. They can sometimes see us clearer than we see ourselves.
I painted this watercolor iris last year, and it was an extension to my exploration of using watercolor with ink. I love the way it turned out, and hope to make more exotic flowers in this style in the future.
